A good test automation framework should be general enough to provide functions that help a tester create automated tests for all the different components of the delivered software system.

The framework should also be easily extensible so it can evolve as the software system evolves

Hi Bruce,

From my experience I would not point out the highest or the lowest priority for the features. Additionally, big role here is what kind of automation frameworks we are considering and what kind of application you want to have under testing.

Apart from thoughts above, I would say that excellent reporting capabilities with possibility to have brilliant configuration and expanding is one of the most important in automation in general. Of course, together with this we should recollect about everything that must facilitate with evolving of automation framework (so be ready to scale in the beginning of framework development), with outstanding maintenance, flexibility and reliability.

I hope high level answer is here. Stay tuned and please note that “automation framework development” = “software development” with all related activities and consequences.

a)Easy to maintain /modular
b)Easy to extend
c)Data should be kept separate from scripts (DataDriven)
d)Robust
